Effective Automated Coal Unloading

Posted by H&P Blog on Wed, Apr 11, 2012 @ 11:22 AM

The main purpose of coal handling systems is to transfer the coal as quickly and cleanly as possible as it is moved from one place to another.  Loading and transporting are just two stages in the process of moving coal from the producer to the consumer.  When transporting by rail, coal must be unloaded from railroad cars and a number of options are available, including rotary dumpers and turnover dumpers, which discharge loads parallel to the rails.

Bringing Railcar Unloader Expertise to Coal-Gen

Posted by H&P Blog on Wed, Aug 10, 2011 @ 11:29 AM

As the name implies, Rotary Railcar Dumper Unloaders are used to unload certain types of railroad cars.  Dumpers hold a car to a section of track and rotate the track and car together to dump out the contents.  Heyl & Patterson machines feature high speed semi-automatic dumping, rotation times as fast as 35 seconds per car and a dumping rate of 10,000 tons per hour when configured in tandem.  Our dumpers can be controlled by just one operator and are ideal for random car or unit train applications.

Train Positioners Save Power Plants Time and Money

Posted by H&P Blog on Thu, Jun 23, 2011 @ 09:04 AM

A locomotive's sole purpose is to move a train along railroad tracks.  It has no payload capacity of its own, and it's not a very efficient mode of transportation.  It is an effective engine for transporting raw bulk materials such as coal, iron ore, limestone and chemicals across the country, but pushing individual railcars a few feet at a time into an unloader is not the best use of its abilities.

Connecting With Short Line and Regional Railroads

Posted by H&P Blog on Tue, Apr 05, 2011 @ 11:00 AM

Short line and regional railroads are an important and growing component of the railroad industry. They operate and maintain 30% of the American railroad industry’s route mileage, and account for 9% of the industry’s freight revenue and 12% of railroad employment. The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) is a non-profit trade association representing the interests of more than 475 short line and regional railroads in legislative and regulatory matters. ASLRRA’s upcoming Annual Convention connects the organization with their customers, vendors, and partner railroads.

Heyl & Patterson Awarded Foreign Manufacturing Certification

Posted by H&P Blog on Mon, Dec 06, 2010 @ 11:00 AM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  Pittsburgh, PA – Heyl & Patterson Inc., a specialist engineering company in Robinson Township, has received certification by India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) to manufacture industrial capital equipment in India.

The certification will lead to infrastructure improvements to the nation of India.

The NTPC is building a new power generation plant in a northern Indian province, and plans to use Heyl & Patterson as its preferred vendor in engineering Wagon Tipplers and Side Arm Chargers to offload coal.

A Wagon Tippler, or Railcar Dumper, is a mechanism used for unloading certain types of railroad cars. It holds the car to a section of track and rotates the track and car together to dump the contents. A Side Arm Charger is a shepherding device that positions loaded railcars one by one into the Wagon Tippler for unloading.

“India today is where China was 15 years ago. Its economy is gearing up, but the rail system hasn’t been up to the task,” said John Edelman, President and CEO. “This certification will enable Heyl & Patterson to help transform the Indian subcontinent by transporting its coal more efficiently to power the nation.”
